About Ferdousi Priyabhashini

Ferdousi Priyabhashini was born in Khulna in the year of Partition. She was 23 years old when the liberation war broke out and was separated from her children and family, going into hiding in a jute mill. She was captured by the opposition and tortured for months, this was the experience of scores of other women. After Independence she was given the title ‘birangona’ or female heroine, but continued to face psychological torture, she was rejected and belittled for her experience in the war. Throughout her life Ferdousi was a vocal advocate for the right to dignity for women like her - speaking openly about her time as a prisoner of war. Ferdousi was a writer, a sculptor, she is a model example of the resilience of spirit and the power of positivity.

About Nindito Nondon

While an autobiography consists of personal memories, Birangana Ferdousi Priyabhashini's autobiography is also a historical document of the birth of the nation called Bangladesh. The horrific past and loss of respect during 1971 was forgotten after tasting sweet independence. Her Autobiography brings up the chilling stories of torture of '71 as well as the shining presence of freedom fighters and the war.

What is Sister Library?
Sister Library is a reading circle where we explore and celebrate female authors from around the world.

Who can become a member of Sister Library?
Anyone can become a Sister Library member by filling out this simple form. It's free.

Who is the Librarian?
The Sister Library was started by artist Aqui Thami in Bombay. In 2020 the Goethe-Institut Bangladesh invited Aqui to bring 100 books to Dhaka for a pop-up event which was so welcome that the pink bookshelf became a permanent fixture in the Goethe Library. The Dhaka chapter of the Sister Library is a collaboration between the Goethe-Institut and HerStory Foundation and books are chosen by the two organizations. We welcome suggestions, just email us.

Who reads?
Whoever raises their hand. You can drop in to read or just listen. You can read a paragraph or a page. It is up to you. We read out loud, and discuss and share. Our intention is not to read the whole book from start to finish, but to start conversations and nurture awareness of female ingenuity.
