On 1 July, Spain took over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union - as a prelude to the trio presidency of Spain, Belgium and Hungary. The motto of the Spanish EU Presidency is "Europa, más cerca" ("Europe, closer"), which symbolises the spirit of human, political and institutional proximity. The priorities of the Spanish Presidency are the reindustrialisation of the EU, the promotion of the green transition, social and economic justice and the strengthening of European unity.

However, the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine and the associated increase in global uncertainty remain. Furthermore, three and a half months after the parliamentary elections, Spain was without an elected government and was only governed on a caretaker basis. How do these challenges influence the implementation of the Spanish Presidency's programme at EU level and how are German-Spanish relations developing under the Spanish Presidency?

Maria Margarete Gosse, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Kingdom of Spain, and Dr Jurij Aston, Director for Horizontal and Global Affairs (RELEX), Council of the European Union, will discuss these and other questions with you under the moderation of Bernd Riegert, correspondent for Deutsche Welle Brussels.

Please register by 10 December.
