A vow made in 1633 still shapes an entire town today: When the Upper Bavarian community of Oberammergau was spared the plague, its inhabitants promised to perform a Passion Play every ten years. The central message of Christianity is portrayed in the traditional style of baroque theatre from May to autumn by over 2000 amateur actors and actresses and fascinates visitors from all over the world.

The Munich photographer CHRISTOPHER THOMAS documented the 41st Oberammergau Passion Play 2010 photographically, concentrating on individual scenes with a small number of actors: With the help of dramatic lighting, Thomas succeeded in approaching the chiaroscuro painting of the Spanish "Golden Age" with his photographic technique in order to visualise the Christian message of the Passion. After the photographs were exhibited at the Schadow House in Berlin from May to October 2022, the exhibition will be on display at the Liaison Office of the German Bundestag in Brussels from May to October.

Together with the EU Liaison Office of the German Bundestag, the Europanetzwerk Deutsch invites to "Die Oberammergauer Passion – Christopher Thomas in conversation with alumni of the Europanetzwerk Deutsch". In discussion, the question of the different European traditions of Passion plays, amateur theatre and collective performance practices will be addressed. Specifically, the Passion plays in Oberammergau, Spain and Belgium will be discussed.

Afterwards, the exhibition can be visited, accompanied by a lunch snack.

Please submit your response by June 25th.
