On foot: sensing carnival

Carnivalesque humour as a form of humour seen as a cultural practice, has always embodied liberal, anti-heirarchichal tendencies. In the Western canon, the carnivalesque is discussed specifically within literary and aesthetic discourses. On the first day of this year’s Africa is/in the Future festival in Brussels, the focus is on traditions of Black carnival as a decolonial and liberating somatic practice:

On foot: Sensing Carnival offers a unique collective experience to explore the deep connection between our feet and the ground – with Mother Earth – while creating a soundscape inspired by Afro-diasporic carnivals. Through a decolonial and sensory approach, this journey immerses us in the contemporary reality of carnival in the British-Caribbean context, using sound and the body as guides. It invites us to feel the pulse of carnival beyond mere representation. This participatory session is a call to listen with our feet, to think about movement and to tune in to the living sounds of a constantly changing heritage.
