Sophisticated mainstream films dealing with queer topics are a relatively new phenomenon; Aimée and Jaguar and Three are just two examples on this list. FREE FALL by Stephan Lacant (2013) is another such film and serves as an indication that emancipation has reached a certain point in our culture. Two police cadets fall in love as one of them is just starting a life with his expecting partner. Uncertainty and great happiness, changing the course of one’s life, and the uncompromising nature of love – leading actors Hanno Koffler and Max Riemelt bring the topic to a large audience.

“Lose Your Head” by Stefan Westerwelle and Patrick Schuckmann (2013) is an equal parts entertaining and wild portrait of gay life in a truly independent thriller. Today’s Berlin, in all its attractiveness for queer folk from around the world, is where this contemporary genre film full of twists and turns goes on a spree, making clever use of the Berlin-in-your-head attitude.
