The residency for Neue Musik in Montreal has been supporting German-Canadian exchange for years. In collaboration with the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and Le Vivier - Carrefour des musiques nouvelles, artists from Germany and Canada each have the opportunity to get to know the local scene of the host country and to work actively there. In return, a Canadian composer will be invited to the HELLERAU - European Centre of the Arts Dresden.
Hanna Hartman is a Swedish composer, sound artist, and performer born in Uppsala in 1961 and based in Berlin. She creates works for radio, electroacoustic music, ensembles, and sound installations and performs internationally. Her work centres on authentic sounds she records herself, removes from their original contexts, and combines into new sonic worlds. Her awards include the Karl Sczuka Prize, the Phonurgia Nova Prize, and a Villa Aurora fellowship. In 2015, she was the German artist in residence in Montreal.
Anna Korsun is a Ukrainian composer, sound artist, and performer born in Donetsk in 1986 and based in Germany. She studied composition in Kyiv and Munich with Moritz Eggert. Korsun writes for formations ranging from solo instruments to orchestra, bringing together acoustic instruments, voice, electronics, and sounding objects. She also collaborates with artists from dance, theatre, visual art, and literature. In 2016, she was the artist in residence in Montreal.
Snežana Nešić is a composer, accordionist, and conductor who studied in Kyiv, Hanover, and at the Université de Montréal. She is Professor of Composition and Head of the Composition Department at Dr. Hoch’s Conservatory in Frankfurt am Main. Her works have been commissioned by institutions including the Gewandhaus Leipzig, Philharmonie Luxembourg, Ensemble Contemporain de Montréal, and Hanover State Opera. Her creative practice frequently explores opera and music theatre, for which she also writes her own texts. In 2017, she was the artist in residence in Montreal.
Christopher A. Williams is a composer, double bassist, and researcher in experimental music, born in San Diego in 1981. His work ranges from chamber music, improvisation, and radio art to collaborations with dance, sound, and visual artists. He studied at the University of California San Diego and earned a PhD from Leiden University with research on notation for improvisers. Alongside his artistic practice, he publishes academic and practice-based research and curates concert formats. In 2018, he was the artist in residence in Montreal.
Yukiko Watanabe is a Japanese composer, curator, and researcher born in Nagano. She studied composition, piano, and chamber music at the Toho Gakuen School of Music and composition with Beat Furrer in Graz and Johannes Schöllhorn in Cologne. Her work emphasises mindful listening and explores the relationships between sound, everyday life, society, and the environment. Her distinctions include the Ö1 Talent Exchange Composition Prize and the 26th Akutagawa Composition Award. In 2019, she was the artist in residence in Montreal.
Matthias Krüger is a composer born in Ulm in 1987 who grew up in Brussels and Trier. He studied composition and Romance languages in Cologne and was a visiting scholarship holder at the Sorbonne in Paris and Columbia University in New York. His work combines contemporary music with references to pop culture, philosophy, dance, and video. His music is performed internationally by renowned ensembles. He continued his successful residency from 2023 into 2024, as a change in the application process prevented a new call for applications from being issued for 2024.
Carl Ludwig Hübsch is a composer, tuba player, and improvising musician born in Freiburg im Breisgau. His musical path led from clarinet through percussion and electronic music to the tuba, whose possibilities he explores through extended techniques. Improvised and contemporary music are central to his work. He also leads ensembles, composes for varied formations, and gives workshops. During his 2025 residency in Montréal, he collaborated with the local scene and Productions SuperMusique.
Eloain Lovis Hübner was born in Bremerhaven in 1993 and composes, conceives, and curates contemporary music. Hübner’s work includes concert music, vocal works, electronic pieces, and contemporary music theatre. Their practice combines precise score-based work with experimental and improvisational processes and moves across space, sound, and performance. In 2022, Hübner received the German Music Authors’ Prize in the emerging talent category. In 2026, Hübner is the artist in residence in Montreal.
