Quebec Premiere
Sisi has reached the last half of her life. Countess Irma de Sztáray finds her in an aristocratic women's commune in Greece, far removed from the strict etiquette of the Austrian-Hungarian court. Sisi lives in absolute freedom, where neither her children nor her husband, Emperor Franz Joseph, play the slightest role. The only important thing is that no one should ever be bored, and that the Empress herself decides the rules of the game. Irma is seduced by the charismatic Sisi and her modern ideas. But every summer comes to an end, and when they return to Vienna, Sisi and Irma's lives change radically.
In her reinterpretation of the oft-told myth of Empress Elisabeth of Austria - named Sisi - Frauke Finsterwalder pits two theatrical forces of nature, Susanne Wolff and Sandra Hüller, against each other. With stunning costumes by Tanja Hausner and a soundtrack by Nico, Portishead and Le Tigre, the film takes us into a world dominated by women and queers which seems to be free, where the restrictive rules of patriarchy are not manifested in ever-tighter corsets (as in Marie Kreutzer's 2022 film Corsage), but in the extremely strict sports and nutritional regimes imposed by the Empress on her own body and those around her.
