A real favorite, this text by Serbian author Iva Brdar depicts the life of a woman in 15 scenes, each beginning with maternal advice that the protagonist tries to follow—without success. Faced with so many imperatives, disobedience becomes inevitable, despite herself. Invariably, this is how she dies in each scene, in increasingly absurd and spectacular ways.
This playful and offbeat fable subtly reveals a feminist reflection devoid of militancy. Far from being a simple chronicle of the female condition, the play, in which the ghost of Sovietism still lurks, questions freedom and rebellion in a society where every citizen is constrained by invisible but very real rules.
After treating us to the festive Trop humains (2024), Catherine Vidal (La mouette, Abraham Lincoln va au théâtre) introduces us to the acclaimed author Iva Brdar! Among her works, Pouces en l'air (2016) received the Brücke Berlin Theaterpreis and first prize in the Sterijino Pozorje competition (Serbia), and Les géraniums ne meurent jamais received the Heartefact Foundation's prize for best socially engaged dramatic text. Et si je ne suis pas sage, qu’allons-nous faire, selected by the Comédie-Française Readers' Bureau (2022-2023), was directed by Catherine Vidal at the Jamais Lu Festival in 2021. The playful and liberating tone is evident in the performances of talented actresses Macha Limonchik and Tiffany Montambault. Vidal reunites with her loyal collaborators Geneviève Lizotte, Francis Rossignol, Ariane Brière, and Alexandra Sutto, and surrounds herself with new ones: Tamara Nguyen, Oleksandra Lykova, and Cédric Delorme-Bouchard. A dramatic discovery not to be missed!
