Paula Beer in conversation with film critic Adam Nayman

Presented by the Goethe-Institut Toronto

She is widely lauded as a new Romy Schneider and at the age of 23 has already worked with some of the greatest European directors. This year, German acting prodigy Paula Beer has two North American premieres at TIFF and will be the featured guest of a special film talk at the Goethe-Institut Toronto.

Paula Beer started her career at age 15 as lead actress in THE POLL DIARIES (TIFF 2010), and had her international breakthrough in François Ozon’s FRANTZ (2016). For the latter role she was honoured with the Marcello Mastroianni Award at Venice, which also garnered her a nomination for the César and Lumière Awards for Most Promising Actress 2017.

Beer, who was a jury member for the recent 1st Cannes International Series Festival, is also the star of the German TV banking thriller and Berlinale hit BAD BANKS, which will be presented by GOETHE FILMS in October as an exclusive Canadian premiere. For her role in BAD BANKS, the Audience Award winner at New York’s KINO Festival, Beer was awarded a Bavarian Television Award and nominated for a German Acting Award.

At TIFF18, you can see Paula Beer in two North American premieres: in Christian Petzold’s Holocaust drama TRANSIT and the Oscar longlisted drama NEVER LOOK AWAY by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (THE LIVES OF OTHERS).

Adam Nayman is a Toronto film critic. He reviews for Sight & Sound, Cinema Scope, CBC Q and others and lectures at the University of Toronto and Ryerson University. His latest book on the Coen Brothers is out 11 September 2018.

Audience members at the Goethe Film Talk will have the chance to win tickets to the TIFF premiere of TRANSIT with Paula Beer that same night!
