Haus Tugendhat by Mies van der Rohe is an iconic example of modern architecture. This documentary by Dieter Reifarth explores the history of today’s World Heritage Site and tells the story of the Jewish Tugendhat family, who had to fight for its preservation. Built in 1928-1930 in the Czech town Brno, this piece of art was misused and partly destroyed after the Tugendhat family was forced to leave it in 1938, to escape Nazism. This documentary shows Haus Tugendhat as part of German history. By exploring how people of different generations cultivate the immense importance of this building, Dieter Reifarth examines contemporary understandings of culture and memory.
2019 marks the centenary of Bauhaus, a German art school that was famous for its approach to design. To mark its history and significance, this year's #DeutscherFilmklub theme is, "Bauhaus and beyond." You are cordially invited to the screening and the discussion afterwards.
