Certainly the highlight out of 39 German films and co-productions at the 41st edition of North America's larget film festival: The prestigious Special Presentations sidebar for outstanding films by major directors will feature Maren Ade's Cannes hit TONI ERDMANN and Werner Herzog's latest feature film SALT AND FIRE as well as four German co-productions:
SNOWDEN by Oliver Stone (US/DE), which was shot in Germany; ELLE by Paul Verhoeven (FR/DE/BE); FRANTZ by François Ozon (FR/DE) - with German actress Paula Beer in a lead role - and THINGS TO COME by Mia Hansen-Løve (FR/DE).
Maren Ade's TONI ERDMANN, with Sandra Hüller and Peter Simonischek in the leads, caused a major sensation in the Competition of the 69th Festival de Cannes with long standing ovations after the world premiere, spontaneous applause in the press screening, sales throughout the world, and euphoric reviews. It is Germany's Oscar submission.
SALT AND FIRE by Werner Herzog, one of the internationally most renowned German directors, had its world premiere in the competition of the 19th Shanghai International Film Festival. The film is about a mysterious hostage taking where the leader of a small scientific delegation is deliberately stranded with two blind boys in an area of gigantic salt flats. SALT AND FIRE was shot in Bolivia. The German actress Veronica Ferres can be seen in one of the leads opposite Michael Shannon and Gael Bercia Bernal.
Also on Canadian screens: Wim Wenders' latest 3D romantic drama THE BEAUTIFUL DAYS OF ARANJUEZ and the "Berlin School" Angela Schanelec's THE DREAMED PATH.
