Author Lauren Fox will share insights from her latest book, Send For Me. An achingly beautiful work of historical fiction that moves between Germany on the eve of World War II and present-day Wisconsin, unspooling a thread of love, longing, and the powerful bonds of family. Lauren Fox earned her MFA from the University of Minnesota and is the author of Days of Awe, Still Life with Husband, and Friends Like Us.
About "SEND FOR ME":
In 1938, on the cusp of World War II, my mother and grandparents fled Germany and immigrated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They left behind most of their family, with the hope that they would eventually reunite. When I was a young adult in the 1990s, I found a trove of letters that my great-grandmother had written to my grandmother, from 1938 through 1941, as they were trying, with increasing desperation, to leave Germany. Send for Me is a work of historical fiction that aims to make sense of the burden of history, the ways that love and loss are passed down through the generations, and the complex, enduring bond between mothers and daughters. I'll speak about these letters, my family's story, and the process of turning intimate, personal history into historical fiction.
