Germany | 1926 | 60 mins
Animation, Silent Movie
Director: Lotte Reiniger
Music by Wolfgang Zeller.
The silhouette film is based on motifs from 1001 Nights and tells of the adventurous journey of Prince Achmed, which begins at the court of the great caliph: An evil sorcerer offers the caliph a magic horse for his birthday in exchange for his daughter Dinarsade. This enrages Dinarsade's brother Achmed, but the magician knows how to lure the prince onto the flying horse. Thus begins a long, adventurous and dangerous journey for the prince. On his first stop, Wak-Wak Island, he falls in love with the fairy Pari Banu and takes her with him on the journey. In revenge, the sorcerer kidnaps the fairy and gives her to the Emperor of China as a slave. Prince Achmed is tied by the sorcerer to a mountain, inside of which lives a good witch. She frees Achmed and helps him to save Pari Banu. But the next adventure is already waiting for the prince, because the fairy is kidnapped by demons from the island of Wak-Wak. Only with the help of Aladdin's magic lamp he has a chance to free the fairy from their power, but it was stolen by the evil sorcerer. The only one who can help in this situation is the good witch. An impressive duel ensues between her and the wizard.
With The Adventures of Prince Achmed, Lotte Reiniger created the first feature-length animated film in film history. She developed the technique and aesthetics of this film genre to artistic perfection as early as the 1920s. Her style is based on Chinese shadow plays, which she expanded through the technical possibilities of film.
