Aguirre, the Wrath of God

Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes
Genre: Adventure
Year: 1972
Running time: 94 minutes
Country: West Germany / Mexico / Peru
Cast: Klaus Kinski, Helena Rojo, Del Negro, Ruy Guerra.

Synopsis: South America, 1560. A Spanish expedition leaves the Peruvian highlands for the Amazon rainforest in search of the mythical Eldorado.

Loosely based on Joseph Conrad’s novel Heart of Darkness (1899), which was also the starting point to Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece Apocalypse Now, Herzog’s film focuses on the figure of the conqueror-prophet, played in 1979 by Marlon Brando in Copolla’s film, but previously incarnated in 1972 by Klaus Kinsky in Aguirre.
