Berliner Philharmoniker Digital Concert Hall
Between October 2025 and June 2026, the first Thursday evening of each month at the Goethe-Institut in Addis Ababa was dedicated to world-class classical music.
The Berliner Philharmoniker's Digital Concert Hall is a treasure trove of outstanding musical performances, featuring concerts by the world-renowned Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in its full symphonic formation, as well as appearances by smaller chamber ensembles drawn from its ranks, outstanding soloists, and distinguished guest conductors from around the world. Founded in 1882, the Berliner Philharmoniker is widely regarded as one of the world's leading symphony orchestras and a benchmark of musical excellence.
At the end of 2008, the orchestra launched the Digital Concert Hall, pioneering a new way of bringing classical music to audiences worldwide beyond the limits of the concert hall and performance date. Today, the platform offers live streams, an extensive concert archive, documentaries, interviews, and educational content. Through the cooperation between the Goethe-Institut and the Digital Concert Hall, this unique musical offering could be experienced on the African continent for the first time.
Together with Ethiopian music lecturers, the Goethe-Institut Äthiopien selected nine concerts from the Digital Concert Hall archive, which were screened monthly at the Goethe-Institut in outstanding audio and video quality. Audiences were able to immerse themselves in the music of composers such as Georg Philipp Telemann (1681–1767) and Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750), as well as Johannes Brahms (1833–1897) and Gustav Mahler (1860–1911). They also experienced works by Maurice Ravel (1875–1937), Dmitri Shostakovich (1906–1975), Hans Werner Henze (1926–2012), and John Adams (born 1947), along with compositions by more than 20 other composers. The Digital Concert Hall not only allowed audiences to engage deeply with this music but also provided an opportunity to exchange ideas and reflections afterward.
