The European election is getting closer, and many are worried about its outcome. Where is European democracy headed and what role does media play in the election? What can an individual do to support democracy? In which way do German and Finnish media speak about Europe, and what does the EU mean for cultural life in Finland and Germany?

ELKE SCHMITTER
Elke Schmitter was born 1961 in Krefeld and lives in Berlin. In the spring of 2018 she was the visiting Max Kade professor at the Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. She has been an author for
Der Spiegel (Hamburg) since 2000. From 1994 to 2000 she worked as a freelance author, literature critic and journalist, mainly for
Die Zeit (Hamburg) and the
Süddeutsche Zeitung (München). Prior to that, from 1989 to 1994, she worked as a journalist for the
taz in Berlin, and from 1992 to 1994 as the magazine’s head editor. From 1985 to 1989 Schmitter worked in the editing department of the publishing company S. Fischer in Frankfurt am Main. She studied philosophy in Munich from 1980 to 1984.
