Interns Like Me Blog
Hallo!
Why did you apply for this internship?
Having studied culture, marketing, library science and administration, I felt that this internship would be a perfect match for my knowledge and interests. Although I had no prior experience with the German language, I had always wanted to learn it. This internship offered me the opportunity to gain hands-on communications experience within a cultural institution while beginning my German language journey.
What were your main tasks?
The Communications & Library Department manages internal and external communications strategically, using various channels, while the library provides space and resources for the public. One of my main responsibilities was preparing the monthly Library Spotlight. Each month, we would highlight an author or theme, chosen thoughtfully by our librarian, Simone. I created visuals and texts for the newsletter and social media with the aim of engaging readers and encouraging visits to the library.
Another key part of my role was supporting our social media channels. I helped to create posts about cultural events, 'Learn German' content, videos and more. Alongside our social media manager, Paula, I scheduled posts tailored to different target audiences. I also undertook research tasks and contributed to making our designs more user-friendly.
What did you learn during your internship, and how will this experience benefit you in the future?
This work placement provided me with valuable experience of learning about the German language and culture, discovering established and emerging authors, filmmakers and artists, and gaining insight into the themes they explore. I also gained valuable first-hand experience of how an international cultural institution operates and of how cultural diplomacy and exchange can be realised through language, education, literature and the arts. I developed practical skills such as communication strategy and user-focused thinking, which will be highly transferable to my future career.
Did the language barrier pose any challenges during your internship?
I started out as a complete beginner in German, and it was frustrating at times when I couldn't understand what others were saying. Thankfully, my colleagues all spoke excellent English and were very supportive. Translation tools also helped me with written texts.
At the same time, I started taking language courses at the Goethe-Institut and immersed myself further through my hobby of listening to my favourite German-language musical, Elisabeth. With work, courses and my personal interest, I was surrounded by German every day. I’ve made huge progress since my first day and can now understand basic words and conversations, which I’m very proud of!
What was the working environment like?
I loved it! The office is beautiful, the team is wonderful and the atmosphere is very welcoming. The schedule is flexible, and interns also benefit from a free language course, which is a fantastic opportunity.
Any advice for future interns?
Keep an open mind! Be willing to learn and try new things, and most importantly, enjoy the process.
Dankeschön und tschüss!
