Why Learn German and Programming at the Same Time?

With this innovative learning offer, the Goethe-Institut responds to early digital development in STEM fields and promotes the acquisition of the German language. Through this sustainable offering of integrated language learning, young people are prepared for an increasingly global job market or potential studies in Germany. The Coding & German program enables children and teenagers to take their first steps in the German language through the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) approach in a face-to-face setting while simultaneously acquiring basic computer science skills using hardware like the Calliope Mini.

The Calliope Mini

The Calliope Mini is a single-board computer designed for educational purposes and used in German elementary schools. It is equipped with various components that can be programmed and controlled.

The Programming Environment

The Open Roberta ®Lab is a freely available graphical programming platform that makes learning to code easy. On this open-source platform by the Roberta® – Learning with Robots initiative from the Fraunhofer IAIS, even beginners can create their first programs quickly using drag and drop.
