After ten years of marriage, Marianne surprises her husband Bruno with the spontaneous decision to separate from him in order to live alone with their eight-year-old son and leave her life in a Paris suburb. Initially, Bruno does not object. His later attempts to reconcile with her are unsuccessful. Marianne has broken with her old habits and given up her material security; now she is starting a new life, marked by loneliness and a certain caution, but also by firm determination.
