Translator to chair monthly translation events (M/F/D)

The Goethe-Institut Glasgow is seeking a translator to chair its monthly Translation Stammtisch events on a freelance basis from March 2026 to March 2027. The peer-to-peer workshops are aimed at both emerging and established literary translators working from German or any other language into English. Participants are invited to bring along an excerpt from their current work-in-progress to share and workshop. Twice per year, we invite an established literary translator as a guest speaker.
The events take place online in the Goethe‑Institut Zoom space in the evening and are held in English. Occasionally, they are organised as hybrid events.
Duties comprise:
- Chairing monthly Translators‘ Stammtisch events, managing group discussion and providing feedback on participants’ translations during the event.
- Chairing two of these monthly events as translator talks with guest speakers and audience Q&As.
- Emailing participants in advance of each event to collect translations to be discussed during the session, and to promote the events.
- Corresponding with two guest speakers per year to prepare guest talks.
- Keeping the mailing list up to date in cooperation with the library team of the Goethe-Institut Glasgow.
- Working with the library team at the Goethe-Institut Glasgow to coordinate and develop the event series throughout the year.
Requirements:
- Experience in working as a published literary translator, with German/English as one of the language combinations.
- Native-level English language skills and excellent communication skills.
- Experience in moderating group discussions, especially online and on Zoom. Experience in moderating hybrid events is desirable.
- Experience in moderating events with translation experts.
- Familiarity with the translation community in Scotland/the UK; knowledge about local networks and organisations highly desirable.
- Availability for evening events, most online, some in person at the Goethe-Institut Glasgow.
- The right to work in the UK.
