Sustainable Twins
Exhibition|A Journey Through Scottish and German Cities Tackling Climate Change
-
Goethe-Institut Glasgow, Glasgow
- Price Free Admission! Bookings via Eventbrite.
Discover the remarkable connections between twinned Scottish and German cities, and how they address the urgent challenges of the climate crisis through innovative projects through interactive installations.
Students from the University of Strathclyde's Department of Architecture - years 2 and 5 - have delved deep into the unique bonds of four twin city partnerships: Aberdeen & Regensburg, Dundee & Würzburg, Edinburgh & Munich, and Glasgow & Nuremberg. They have explored the topic over the course of two semesters, their findings culminating in an inspiring interactive exhibition, hosted within the heritage building of the Goethe-Institut Glasgow at Park Circus as part of the Architecture Fringe Festival 2025.
Their journey began with academic research—reviewing, analysing, and comparing approaches that these 'twins' have adopted to confront shared urban challenges caused by the climate crisis. This collective effort resulted in a dynamic repository of data, visualisations, and mappings, meticulously refined in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut.
Building on this foundation, the students channelled their creativity into designing captivating installations that showcase their findings while inviting audiences to connect, engage, and contribute with their participation.
The exhibits offer a variety of experiences: From inviting visitors to imagine and propose a third city through a large-scale interactive puzzle via a stop-motion animation that illustrates climate-conscious decision-making and a living landscape of tree seedlings, destined for planting after the exhibition's close to an installation inspired by Bavarian beer garden culture, fostering cultural exchange and creating a warm setting for kinship and discussion.
Join us to explore these thought-provoking ideas and be part of the conversation about how cities can stand together in the fight against climate change. Step into this celebration of innovation, connection, and action—where heritage meets the future.
The exhibition will be opened with a vernissage on 10 June, 6 pm.
