An evening of poetry and presentations about German-Jewish writer Else Lasker-Schüler.
Discover the poetry of Else Lasker-Schüler (1869-1945). Actor John Nettles, best-known for his roles in the TV series
Bergerac and
Midsomer Murders, will be reading excerpts from her work. Participants also include the actress Claudia Gahrke, director Andreas Schäfer and Astrid Schmetterling from Goldsmiths, University of London. Readings will be in both English and German.
The event is part of an international project entitled
Transit Lounge Else which focuses on the life and work of the German-Jewish writer whose 150th birthday will be celebrated in 2019. It shines a light on the fate of exiled artists, exemplified by Lasker-Schüler's experience of fleeing Nazi Germany in the 1930s. The event series has already been performed in Stockholm, New York and Los Angeles - cities where many artists have lived in exile.
Transit Lounge Else was created by the
Else Lasker-Schüler-Society (Wuppertal) in cooperation with the
Centre for Persecuted Arts (Solingen), and designed by the artist duo
Astronautenkost.
The project is funded by the Federal Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany. The Goethe-Institut London is delighted to be hosting this event.
