Online Reservation This recital program features repertoire from various European cultures in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The oldest work is the enchanting Sonata in A-Major, D664 by Franz Schubert (1797 - 1828). This cheerful and bright sonata was probably composed during one of the happiest times in Schubert's life. Schubert struggled a great deal with the form of the sonata during this period and left several unfinished works. This three-movement sonata is relatively short, concentrated, and follows Mozart’s ideas formally.

Like Schubert, Frédéric Chopin was a master of harmony. His Prélude in C-sharp minor, Op. 45, is an admirable example of the art of constantly illuminating a melody in various keys.

2022 marks the 150th anniversary of Alexander Scriabin’s birth. With Chopin as his role model, he developed into one of the most important representatives of new music in the early 20th century. His Sonata no. 10 is radiant and bright, describing the sun and its light with many trills and intense colors.

At the end of the program is Sonata by Franz Liszt, the only sonata he ever wrote. It is a great masterpiece and often associated with Goethe's Faust. All themes are plastically invented and constantly changing. The sonata is in four movements; however, Liszt manages to join all sections together to sound like a single sonata movement. Playing and listening to this sonata is a journey full of adventure and surprises. It ends quietly and thoughtfully after a huge climax.
