Art inspired by anthroposophy has an important role to play supporting child development at all stages. In early childhood, teachers use storytelling to nurture children’s imagination and to build emotional warmth. In primary school, artistic activities such as drawing, painting, molding and singing help to establish a lively and engaging learning environment. For teenagers, art serves as a tool for self-discovery through direct, personal experience. The common thread running through all these stages, however, is art's ability to foster and encourage balance between body, mind, and spirit.
The anthroposophic approach to art and art therapy had its origins in Germany more than a century ago, and this is now internationally accepted as a form of holistic human development. In Thailand, the Anthroposophic Art Therapy Institute is accredited by iARTe (International Association of Anthroposophic Arts Therapies Educations). Graduates from these programs are trained to use art as a therapeutic tool to support children and adolescents through their challenges and help them develop a balanced and engaged approach to education and life.

Exhibition, Goethe-Institut Library
The Art of Living exhibition showcases artworks rooted in anthroposophical theory, originally created by Dr. Rudolph Steiner (1861-1925) during his life in Germany and Switzerland, and highlights the process by which students develop into professional anthroposophic art therapists. Many of the works in the exhibition engage with color relationships in ways that are inspired by Goethe’s Theory of Colours (published in 1810), which Steiner was interested in. The works also reflect a broader interest in Goethean science, a phenomenological approach that emphasizes the use of careful, holistic observations as a way of gaining a deeper and richer understanding of nature. By reflecting the working methods and artistic practices of students studying on the postgraduate program in professional anthroposophic art therapy, the exhibition offers insights into students’ and practitioners’ artistic and therapeutic development.
The power of art therapeutic processes is reflected in the range of works on display, with 60 pieces created in media including watercolor, chalk, wax and pencil.
The exhibition may be viewed during the library’s opening hours.
