-
Goethe Saal, Goethe-Institut Thailand, Bangkok
- Language English, Thai
- Price Free Admission
This workshop is an act of refusal and reclamation. We work to unlearn hegemonic frameworks, recover suppressed histories, and trace connections across Southeast Asia, the Global South, and geographies that exceed the nation-state. The goal: to practice sound on decolonial terms.
We'll use Free/Libre and Open-Source Software (FLOSS) to recreate Southeast Asian sonic digitally—Orca (Hundred Rabbit) for algorithmic composition, Leimma (Khyam Allami and Counterpoint) for tuning systems outside Western standards. At the end of the workshop, all participants will contribute sounds, build together, and perform as a collective body.
Capped at 20 people.
Apply by December 8, 11:59 PM
Free & Open to all. No coding knowledge or musical training necessary.
Participants will need to
- Bring a laptop to join the exercises
- Have a web browser (Chrome or Firefox) installed (Safari is not supported).
- Set up a virtual MIDI bus
- Set up a MIDI network
- No stress if you have an issue, set it up. We will go through it together in the workshop.
- Access is a priority, not a privilege. If you require equipment or technical support to participate, contact us confidentially at hi@elekhlekha.xyz at least one week before the workshop. We're committed to finding solutions.
About elekhlekha อีเหละเขละขละ [@elekhlekha] [@kengchakaj] [@nitchafame]
elekhlekha อีเหละเขละขละ is a collaborative research-based group consisting of immigrant Bangkok-born, Brooklyn-based artists, Kengchakaj–เก่งฉกาจ and Nitcha–ณิชชา. The collective delves into subversive storytelling by exploring non-hegemonic sounds and visual archives, historical research–decoding, and unlearning biases. elekhlekha’s work spans performing documents, multimedia, and technology centers to interrogate, experiment, explore, and define decolonized possibilities.
elekhlekha อีเหละเขละขละ [@elekhlekha] is a Thai word that means dispersedly, chaos, unorganized, all over, and non-direction to break free our practices from being labeled through a Western lens.
Through their work, the collective aims to investigate and unfold layers of Southeast Asia’s political complexity through the continuity of oral & aural history and sound cultures’ lineage. The juxtaposition of ancestors’ knowledge and new aesthetics as algorithmic compositions reconfigured to a new context builds a new relationship, breaks the social expectation that sound cultures must be traditional, and carries the sounds to evolve and expand in the new context of algorithmic automation, generative, and finds possibilities derailing from consciousness.
elekhlekha’s first collaborative project, Jitr (จิตร), was awarded the Lumen Prize Gold Award in 2022.
