The Octave Zero: 80 Years of Bruce Gaston, the Melodies of Fong Naam

The Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC), in collaboration with the Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music, the Office of Contemporary Art and Culture, Ministry of Culture, Goethe-Institut Thailand, and the Fong Naam Ensemble, proudly presents 'The Octave Zero: 80 Years of Bruce Gaston, the Melodies of Fong Naam’, a commemoration of the life and legacy of Bruce Gaston.

Bruce Gaston (March 11, 1946 - October 17, 2021) is a key figure who created a musical and cultural phenomena in the history of contemporary Thai music. As an American, he transcended the boundaries of language and ethnicity to assimilate and contribute to Thailand's musical heritage. He was not only an accomplished musician and composer, but also a cornerstone in propelling Thai music to the world stage with international standards. Thus, Bruce Gaston is a legacy of knowledge acquisition and respect for Thai culture, reflecting a dialogue between the east and the west.

Bruce Gaston’s life journey is a remarkable story of devotion, learning, humility, and artistic courage. His work did not merely adapt Thai music for global audiences; rather, it expanded the philosophical and structural possibilities of sound itself. His legacy continues to inspire generations of composers, performers, scholars, and cultural practitioners in Thailand and beyond.

The event will be held from 5–15 March 2026 at the Studio, 4th Floor, Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC), Bangkok.

EXHIBITION:
A comprehensive exploration of Bruce Gaston’s biography and creative output. The showcase features rare photographs, original manuscripts, annotated scores, archival audio recordings, and key instruments from his personal practice. Visitors will gain rare insight into the intellectual and artistic frameworks that shaped his groundbreaking contributions.
In addition to the exhibition, the programme includes a series of public activities designed to foster dialogue and creative exchange.

PANEL DISCUSSION: Intergenerational Dialogues in Music, Art, and Culture
This session invites creators and scholars to bridge the past and future, moving beyond traditional artistic silos. By revisiting Bruce Gaston’s visionary ideas, the panel examines their relevance in a modern context. Featured panellists include Dnu Hantrakul, Jiraphan Angsavananda, Hicky Eikelmann, Janaprakal Chandruang, and others.

WORKSHOP: Decoding 'Bruce Gaston’s Way of Thinking’
An interactive workshop inviting participants to listen, analyse, interpret, and decode the compositional logic and philosophical approaches embedded in Gaston’s works. The session will explore how his thinking transcended the divisions between Thai music, Western musical systems, and broader contemporary human expression.

CONCERT: 'Homage to The Octave Zero: The Sonic Legacy of Fong Naam’
A major performance featuring significant works by the Fong Nam ensemble from different periods of its history, reflecting the ensemble’s enduring artistic identity. The concert also includes ‘The Next Zero: A Contribution to Bruce Gaston’, a presentation of newly created works by emerging artists inspired by Bruce Gaston and the Fong Nam ensemble, demonstrating how his legacy continues to generate new sonic possibilities.

SPECIAL PERFORMANCE: '*Krao Nai*’ (Chasing the Chicken) by Pichet Klunchuen Company and ‘Kra-ua Thaeng Khwai’ (a Buffalo Hunt)
A Musical Comedy by Morrdokmai. Extending Gaston’s spirit of dialogue into the realm of movement and performance art.


SPECIAL CONCERT: 'Great Day! Honouring Marian Anderson’presented by Kit Young, an American pianist who was active in Thai musical circles during the same era as Bruce Gaston.
This special performance reflects parallel journeys of cross-cultural musical exploration.

'The Octave Zero’ is not merely a birthday remembrance nor simply a reunion of artists and collaborators. It is conceived as a living continuation—a space for questioning, imagination, experimentation, and courage. It revisits the legacy of a teacher who once reshaped the terrain of contemporary Thai music, reopening his ideas to present and future generations.

By bringing Bruce Gaston’s artistic philosophy back into conversation with today’s cultural realities, the exhibition and its accompanying programs aim to open pathways for countless new sounds toemerge, resonate, and evolve without end.
