In this very personal documentary, director Carolin Genreith reveals how her father undergoes a radical change of lifestyle after separating from her mother. The retired divorcee embarks on yearly pleasure trips to Thailand with his male friends. Far from home, in the “Land of Smiles”, he meets another woman, younger than his daughter. Head over heels in love, he begins to make wedding plans. At home in the North Eifel, people start to make fun of him, branding him a sex tourist. Although he doesn’t really care, his daughter does. Sceptical at first, Carolin Genreith feels the need to understand what has prompted her father to make such a decision. She films him at home amidst his wedding preparations and accompanies him to Thailand where he meets the family of his future wife. Genreith films the whole procedure, including the wedding ceremony itself. In the process, she explores the topics of loneliness, the need for love and creates an awareness of cultural differences regarding our understanding of love and marriage.
