GAPP 101: National Leadership Workshop for Prospective Exchange Coordinators

Are you thinking of starting a GAPP exchange but don't know how?

Offered once a year, GAPP 101 is a two-day national onboarding and leadership workshop for teachers from across the United States who are preparing to launch a German American Partnership Program (GAPP) exchange at their school. Hosted by GAPP and the Goethe-Institut, the workshop is designed to develop prospective coordinators into confident exchange leaders: educators who can make the case to administrators and school boards, mobilize parents and community partners, guide students through an intercultural experience, and manage the logistics, funding, and host-family relationships that make an exchange succeed.

Each cohort of approximately 25–30 attendees brings together first-time coordinators, veteran coordinators, alumni, and GAPP and Goethe-Institut staff, so that new coordinators learn directly from those who have led exchanges before them. Through expert-led sessions, interactive roundtables, and dedicated planning time, participants leave with a concrete draft plan for their own exchange, practical tools they can use right away, and a nationwide network of peers and mentors to support them as they lead their school’s first GAPP exchange.

Workshop Partners and Locations

GAPP 101 is conducted in partnership with local universities, the Goethe-Institut, and partner organizations in the transatlantic space. Their participation connects coordinators to the broader network of institutions that support German-American educational exchange. The workshop rotates among host cities across the country; past locations include Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, New York City, Phoenix, and Washington, DC.

Our next workshop will take place January 29–31, 2027, in St. Louis, Missouri. Below is a quick overview of the program. Accepted participants will receive the full program schedule.
