Masai Sepuru
Masai is a playwright, director, and set designer. His staged plays include Township Phantoms, Morongwa, The Tragedy of Samuel Omunye, and Dark Magic.
Masai is also a published poet, with some of his poems published on both local and international publication sites, journals and magazines. He performed in various slams, winning two of the biggest slams in the country (Tshwane Speak out Loud and Word N Sound) back-to-back, making him the only poet to have held both titles at the same time. During the ‘Word N Sound’ Poetry League, Masai won the title of King of the Mic six times. He is also the first champion of the annual Speak Child Slam Competition. He won the Joburg Arts Live Slam in 2020, making it four years in a row that Masai Sepuru won a slam competition. As a spoken word artist, Masai has showcased his work in theatres across South Africa, including the South African State Theatre, the Market Theatre, the Joburg Theatre and the Tx Theatre. He was the guest performer in the 2019 and 2020 Basha Uhuru Festival, Jazzuary.FM, Busboys, World of Words and Poets. In 2020, he was also one of the guest performers in the annual Poetry Africa Festival. With the organization, Hear My Voice, Masai Sepuru went on a two-week Performance exchange in Sweden, performing at the Gothenburg Book Festival and a poetry slam in Uppsala.
During the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic lockdown, Masai researched the influence Jazz artists in South Africa had on the dismantling of Apartheid, then went on to give a poetry lecture on this. Masai has organized workshops and performances with poetry organizations such as Scribe Rite, Poetoria, Blue Pulse, Black Suburbia, and Mzansi Poetry Academy.
