Cav' Creative Economies

Cav’ - ein südafrikanischer, umgangssprachlicher Ausdruck, der gebraucht wird um "verstehe" oder "check das aus" zu sagen.

About us

Cav’ Creative Economies was a Goethe-Institut initiative that comprised the two projects Cav’ Platform and Cav’ Township. The programme aimed to contribute to the creative and cultural industries in South Africa, through enabling creative organisations and small businesses towards income generation.

2023

In 2023, the Cav’ Creative Economies project had a particular focus on supporting gender transformation within the Culture and Creative Industries (CCI), as part of the overall strategy of the Global Project CCI being implemented in six countries in the Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regions. Thus, the four training programmes implemented in South Africa under the Cav’ Townships and Cav’ Platform projects were only targeted at women participants. more

Digital Intermediaries

The field of digital intermediaries in the African context is poorly defined and most intermediaries are not aware that the work they do can be defined as that of an intermediary. Practitioners operating in the CCIs will identify themselves as producers, curators, distributor, aggregators, or any other support role for creatives.

Animation Production Pipeline

The animation industry in South Africa has a need to constantly innovate on its pipelines to stay competitive and to reduce the high costs of producing animation products. Thus, the Animation Production Pipeline focused on training women graduates in innovating within an animation production pipeline.

Future-Proof Monetisation Programme

Given the multiple crises that the world is enduring and many others that may follow, the Future-Proof Monetisation programme provided training on leveraging technology in monetising small creative businesses and building resilient business models.

Drone Divas

Drone Divas was a drone training and internship programme for young township-based women between the ages of 18 and 35. They were trained in drone operation, coding, drone cinematography and entrepreneurship. This was followed by a three-month paid internship programme for at least ten of the women in creative drone companies.

Cav' Townships

Cav' Townships developed and implemented enabling strategies for young creative people in townships. It promoted and supported local cultural and creative hubs, in order to address unemployment and income generation.

Platform

The Cav’ Platform contributed to existing efforts in the creative and cultural industry (CCI). Through Forums based on research and a virtual platform, Cav Platform provided a space for dialogue, networking, information and resource sharing.

The project Cultural and Creative Industries was jointly implemented from late 2018 until early 2023 by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and the Goethe-Institut on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). It improved employment and income opportunities for creative professionals in six partner countries: Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Kenya, Senegal, and South Africa. The project operated mainly in the music, fashion, design and animation sectors. In addition to promoting the development of entrepreneurial, digital, creative and technical skills through training programmes, the project aimed to strengthen the framework conditions and the ecosystem of the cultural and creative industries.

Cav' Entrepreneurship Platform

The Project ‘Cav’ Platform’ aimed to contribute to existing efforts by government and civil society organisations to coordinate the CCI through networking and creating possibilities for the visibility of the industry. The project also strove to help the CCI ecosystem recognise the work its various parts are doing to further develop the industry.

Cav' Townships

The Cav' Townships project aims to address youth unemployment and income generation in the creative industry through entrepreneurship. The objective of the project is to develop and then implement formats for the development of professional perspectives in the creative space. The main focus is on supporting the generation of income through entrepreneurship and employment.
