This performance is based on the artist’s research into the concept of echo as a sonic phenomenon capable of encompassing lost or forgotten voices. Our Voice Is Echo! explores the compelling story of a women’s folk music group active in Iran during the 1970s and 1980s. Led by Ziba Shirvan—an Afro-Iranian musician and founder of an all-female folk ensemble in the southern province of Hormozgan—the group included Nasreh Baghanbar, Zuleikha Ghavidel, and male band member Doost Mohammad Zamani. Together, they carved out a radical space in Iranian folk music, boldly challenging the rigid gender norms of their time: women played instruments traditionally reserved for men, reclaiming sound as a form of public expression and asserting musical performance as a social role not exclusively available to men.
This research also led the artist to the Ear of Dionysius, an ancient limestone cave in Syracuse, Sicily, renowned for its remarkable acoustics, which can amplify even the faintest sound. This site became a metaphor for the way history simultaneously distorts and preserves voices. Once used as a quarry and later a prison, the cave’s walls are imagined to have absorbed the whispers of enslaved laborers, captives, and other silenced histories.
The live sound performance combines field recordings made within the cave with the music of the Iranian folk ensemble.
