Antifascist cultures of the present

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE MUNICH – the residency programs of the City of Munich and Lothringer 13 Halle, in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut, are offering three research and working residencies for professional artists from various artistic disciplines (visual arts, music, literature, film, dance/performance). Selected artists develop an independent/self-chosen project that conceptually engages with the topic of “Antifascist cultures of the present.” The residency is part of the joint project of Lothringer 13 Halle and the Goethe-Institut titled “Antifascist cultures of the present.”

Conditions of funding

Professional artists from various artistic disciplines (visual arts, music, literature, film, dance/performance), with primary residence in one of the following countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine.

During their residency, the selected artists will stay at the Ebenböckhaus and develop an independent/self-chosen project that conceptually engages with the topic of “ANTIFASCIST CULTURES OF THE PRESENT”. The team of Ebenböckhaus and Lothringer 13 Halle will accompany the research process and provide support throughout the residency. Additionally, each artist will hold a studio space at Lothringer 13 Halle. It is expected that the artists will participate in a public event at Ebenböckhaus and present their project at Lothringer 13 Halle.

Residency Award:

Each of the three guest artists receives a monthly grant of €1,300 from the residency program of the City of Munich (a total of €3,900 for the three-month residency). For one public event in the Ebenbroeckhaus, each artist is provided €1,000 for material and production costs upon agreement. Housing in the Ebenböckhaus is free of charge. Travel expenses (economy class) within Europe up to €350 will be refunded by the Goethe-Institut Athen. Additional production costs of up to €1,500 per project for development and further elaboration will be made available by Lothringer 13 Halle upon agreement.

  • Applicants who previously completed a residency at Villa Waldberta or Ebenboeckhaus are not eligible.
  • The applicant’s primary residence must be in one of the following countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Turkey, or Ukraine.
  • Applicants must be professional and full-time artists/cultural workers.
  • Applicants of all artistic disciplines are welcome, including visual arts, music, literature, dance/performance, and film. 
  • Good knowledge of English and/or German. 
  • Personal application only (no applications submitted by third parties). 
  • The selected artist must comply with all contractual requirements of the City of Munich as the operator of the residency program at Ebenböckhaus. A separate grant agreement will be issued.

The residency period is fixed and cannot be postponed, significantly shortened, or split. Joint or collective applications are not possible. We welcome applications from people of all nationalities, religions, sexual identities, age groups, and social backgrounds. The Ebenboeckhaus is not barrier-free. Due to limited space, partners, children, or other family members cannot be accommodated.

Please submit your application documents in English via the application portal of the Goethe-Institut (registration required) by August 18, 2025, 3 pm CET:
  • All documents must be compiled into a single PDF file named “LastName_FirstName.pdf”. The file must not exceed 10MB.
  • Motivational Letter (statement of interest in the residency) and project idea related to the topic of “Antifascist Cultures of the Present” (max. 2 pages of text + 4 pages of visual material). 
  • CV (Curriculum Vitae) (max. 2 pages)
  • Artistic Portfolio (max. 20 pages)
Applications that do not cover the criteria will not be considered.

An initial pre-selection (longlist) will be conducted by the respective Goethe-Institutes in the eligible countries. A jury consisting of representatives from Artist-in-Residence Munich, Lothringer 13 Halle, Goethe-Institut Athen (regional management), as well as experts from cultural institutions in the region and from Munich, will select the final shortlist and make the final decisions.  
Up to 10 applicants will be invited for an online interview by September 25, 2025. 
Final decisions will be announced by October 5, 2025.

About the Partners

Artist-in-Residence Munich - Ebenböckhaus

The Artist-in-Residence Program of the City of Munich offers artists, curators, and researchers from around the world space, time, and financial support for the purpose of housing, working, presenting, reflecting, and engaging in discourse. The Ebenböckhaus is located in the district of Munich-Pasing. Part of the residency program is a 150m² apartment for three guests. The house includes three lockable living/sleeping rooms, one shared kitchen, one bathroom/toilet, and rooms for small-scale events. In coordination with the other users – two archives in the house and cultural associations in the neighborhood – residents can also use the foyer on the ground floor and the adjacent garden for public programs.

Lothringer 13 Halle 

Lothringer 13 Halle is a municipal, non-profit art space dedicated to experimental approaches in contemporary art and cultural practice. Since 1980, the institution has been located in a former industrial building at Lothringer Strasse 13 in the Munich district of Haidhausen. It provides 700 square meters of exhibition space for collaborative projects with regional artists and artists around the world. Since April 2025, the Lothringer 13 Halle has been led by the Bulgarian artist and curator Kalas Liebfried.
