Deutsch Lehren Lernen®

Deutsch Lehren Lernen©, or DLL for short (Learn to Teach German), is an advanced training and professional development series for teachers of German as a Foreign Language or German as a Second Language.

The current didactic content of DLL enables participants to develop their teaching competencies and acquire a formal GFL qualification. Ideas and approaches taught in the training programme can be applied directly in a practical setting.

Participants optimise their teaching practice by observing and reflecting on their own lessons and also those of other teachers thanks to video recordings from classrooms around the world. They use these resources to identify and try out new teaching strategies.

DLL is aimed at teachers of German as a Foreign Language or German as a Second Language, with or without prior teaching experience.

Even without a degree in German or German as a Foreign Language, teachers can improve their skills by taking modules from the DLL series. To qualify for the course, participants must have B2-level German according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

These units are especially beneficial for participants who already work as a teacher, have teaching experience or have completed work experience or classroom observations of German lessons.

DLL is a series of ten GFL and three GSL units which follow a skills- and practice-based advanced training concept and can be completely separately. All units cover such aspects as teaching skills, grammar and vocabulary, phonetics, media didactics, etc. For brief descriptions of the content, click here.

Around 400 teaching videos form the core of the course. These videos offer participants insights into authentic classroom settings all around the world.

All units are available to buy in print format (look inside the book). Alternatively, you can complete them online on the Goethe-Institut learning platform (look at the learning platform). The 13 DLL units were written by 43 authors from science and teaching practice. Chairs at altogether 17 universities in Germany and Austria are involved in their development.
