After the November pogroms of 1938, thousands of Jews wanted to leave the German Reich as quickly as possible. However, entry regulations were very strict and some countries were only willing to accept children. Belgium was also prepared to grant residence to around 1000 children. The Jewish communities and aid organisations in the German Reich and in the host countries as well as countless private helpers took care of the entry permits, the journey and the children's new place of residence. In North Rhine-Westphalia, the Israelite Orphanage in Dinslaken and the Provinzialverband für jüdische Wohlfahrtspflege in der Rheinprovinz in Cologne were particularly involved in the organisation.

The children were transported to safety in 17 transports via Aachen and Herbesthal to Belgium - only a temporary safety, as it turned out after the German occupation of Belgium in May 1940 at the latest.

The exhibition presents almost unknown rescue stories and the extraordinary lives of the rescued boys and girls. Last but not least, it focuses on the great willingness of the Belgian population to help, to which many children owe their lives.

In addition to visiting the exhibition, you will have the opportunity to talk to contemporary witness Adolphe Nysenholc from the association ‘L'enfant caché’.
