To coincide with the Manifesta art biennial – which, for its 16th edition, has chosen the Ruhr region as its venue due to its unique historical background as a polycentric industrial area – we will be visiting this fascinating region as part of an extended weekend German language course. We aim to examine the economic and social structural change in the Ruhr region and highlight how it has transformed from its industrial past – characterised by coal and steel – into an innovative, knowledge- and technology-oriented region. Innovative ideas for the future, with a focus on the transformation of work, climate change and the future of industry, will be given special attention during this course, whilst the artistic perspective will also be explored through a visit to a Manifesta venue.

The course programme covers the following key topics and activities:
  • Guided tour of the ThyssenKrupp steel production facility in Duisburg and a meeting with representatives of ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe
  • Meeting with MEP Dennis Radtke, member of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs
  • Visit to the North Rhine-Westphalia State Parliament in Düsseldorf and meeting with members of the state parliament
  • Visit and guided tour of the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Discussion with representatives of Manifesta Ruhr 16 and visit to a cultural community space as part of the Biennale
  • Participation in ‘ExtraSchicht’ – The Night of Industrial Culture
The programme includes costs for accommodation, language course sessions and one meal per day.
