Halaqat - Exploring cultural links between Europe and the Arab world
Halaqat presents together with Bozar - Centre for Fine Arts and the festival Cinemamed the documentary "Q" by Jude Chehab. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the director moderated by Maria Davina.
An intimate and haunting portrayal of a quest for love and acceptance at any cost,
Q depicts the insidious influence of a secretive matriarchal religious order in Lebanon on three generations of women in the Chehab family. Filmmaker Jude Chehab potently documents the unspoken ties and consequences of loyalty that have bonded her mother, grandmother, and herself to the mysterious organization.
Jude Chehab is a Lebanese-American filmmaker whose cinematic interests have drawn her to the exploration of the esoteric and the spiritual. A richly layered visual and intimate personal shooting style developed under the mentorship of Abbas Kiarostami’s final student group. In 2021, Filmmaker Magazine named her one of the 25 New Faces of Independent Film.
Halaqat started in 2021 as a grant co-financed by the European Union (under the designation: EU-LAS CULTURE), the Goethe-Institut and Bozar - Centre for Fine Arts Brussels. The project was implemented by the Goethe-Institut in collaboration with Bozar from 01.02.2021 until 31.01.2023. Halaqat continues in 2023 with its own funds and with activities in Europe and in the Arab worlds.
