Would you like to talk to Marie Curie, Vincent van Gogh or Cleopatra? AI-powered chatbot tools promise ‘realistic and in-depth conversations with all historical figures’. This workshop will explore how AI chatbot reenactments in museums and online engage audiences, the imaginaries created around them and the risks and challenges posed by these tools and the use of AI. It will also introduce a range of projects and generative AI tools used to create images, videos and voices that support these simulations.
In the workshop, participants will create chatbots of historical figures on Character.ai and explore them. To prepare, participants will be asked to create an account on the platform and collect important notes about a historical figure, including a brief description, as well as examples of their speeches, writings or quotes. For those who do not wish to use Character.ai, an alternative chatbot platform is available that does not require registration. The session will end with a group discussion where insights and reflections will be shared.
The online workshop will be led by Lina Harder, PhD student at the Centre for Digital Narrative at the University of Bergen. Lina Harder (she/her) is a PhD student at the Centre for Digital Narrative at the University of Bergen, where she researches the interface between artificial intelligence (AI) and historical reenactment. With a background in museum communication and curating, she has developed exhibition projects and digital content for museums in Berlin, Bonn and Leipzig. She holds an M.A. in World Heritage Studies and a B.A. in Cultural Studies with a specialisation in History. Lina combines her academic and professional experience to explore the role of AI in cultural and educational contexts.
The Art Meets Tech series explores visual art, music, narrative and craft, highlighting technologies such as AI, Web3, immersive technologies, digital fabrication and creative coding. With predominantly online workshops and hybrid formats, the programme offers hands-on experiences, critical discussions and networking within a diverse European community. It invites you to discover how technology is reshaping art and how art is redefining technology - a dynamic exchange platform for ideas and skills.
