Artificial intelligence is increasingly changing the field of documentary filmmaking, influencing both creative approaches and ethical issues. From research and narrative development to visual design, AI-powered tools can be integrated at every stage of the process, fundamentally changing the way stories are developed, structured and visualised. For example, AI-supported tools can help filmmakers to analyse large amounts of data, recognise patterns in archive material or create transcriptions and translations, making the research phase much easier. In the area of storytelling development, machine learning models can suggest narrative structures based on historical patterns or viewer interactions. Visually, AI technologies such as deepfakes, generative image design and automated editing software enable new ways of reconstructing, enhancing and creatively editing film material.

But these innovations also raise urgent ethical questions. To what extent should AI-generated images be used in documentary films without misleading the audience? How does automation influence human authorship in the field of non-fiction storytelling? And what risks does the use of AI pose when it comes to interpreting historical sources and marginalised narratives?

Using case studies from the field, this workshop examines both the potential and the challenges of AI in documentary film. Participants will gain insights into how new technologies are changing the way truth is conveyed in the digital age - and how creative possibilities can be reconciled with ethical responsibility.

Whether you are a filmmaker, journalist, student or simply interested in the intersection of technology and storytelling, this workshop offers valuable insights into current developments around AI in documentary film.

Anna Giralt Gris is a filmmaker, producer and researcher. She is co-founder of the interdisciplinary centre for creation and research Artefacto, which explores the intersections between technology, cinema and politics. She has directed and produced films that have been selected and awarded at festivals such as CPH:DOX, Visions du Réel, HotDocs, SXSW and IDFA. She coordinates the course ‘Cinema, Algorithms and AI’ at the UAB and is an associate professor at the UPF in Barcelona and former director of the +RAIN Film Festival, the first European film festival for AI-generated films.

The Art Meets Tech series explores visual art, music, narrative and craft, highlighting technologies such as AI, Web3, immersive technologies, digital fabrication and creative coding. With predominantly online workshops and hybrid formats, the programme offers hands-on experiences, critical discussions and networking within a diverse European community. It invites you to discover how technology is reshaping art and how art is redefining technology - a dynamic exchange platform for ideas and skills.
