Yael Ronen is one of the most exciting contemporary theatre directors in Berlin. The Gorki Theatre describes her “greatest provocation: her use of dark humour in addressing historical conflicts." Together with the Théâtre de Liège, the Goethe-Institut presents her latest play, Bucket List, as part of the Anaesthesia of the Heart series. The play premiered at Berlin’s Schaubühne on 9 December 2023.

A man wakes up on a Saturday morning and finds that the world around him has changed beyond recognition. His reality has been dismantled. Everything he thought he knew and believed in seems to have been shattered. Nothing is as it was before.

He becomes a patient at a dubious start-up that is developing a new technology that allows memory and recollection to be chosen: “Zeitgeist” addresses the global market for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder by altering and erasing traumatic memories through a unique process. But until the gift of a past-free present fully unfolds, phantom memories may occur: strange collages of fragments of memories from lives lived—one's own and those of others.
In this musical hallucination about an overwhelming present, songwriter Shlomi Shaban and director Yael Ronen, together with the ensemble and a three-piece band, use music as a tool to delve into the abysses that our bodies may remember better than our forgetful brains.
