Werkplaats Walter

Focus: jazz and electronic music, 29.11 - 05.12.2021 in Brussels

The music residency programme is part of the European project HALAQAT organised by the Goethe-Institut together with Bozar - Centre for Fine Arts Brussels and co-funded by the European Union. Serving as a bridge between both regions, HALAQAT offers a contemporary journey into artistic imaginaries shared by the Arab world and Europe and focuses on the diversity and richness of cultural collaborations today to support and strengthen them in the future.

The Goethe-Institut and Bozar together with Werkplaats Walter in Belgium and the Amman Jazz Festival in Jordan start a music residency programme in 2021/2022 and are looking for six motivated emerging professional musicians from both the Arab World and Europe to meet, exchange ideas and perform in Brussels (Belgium) from 29.11 to 05.12.2021. The concept of the residency programme is to focus on free improvisation, experimentation, real live exchange of musical ideas. It aims at bringing together musicians not necessarily knowing each other and giving them the opportunity to perform, improvise, experiment and search for common grounds together.

The residency programme consists in a cycle of three residencies all taking place in Brussels. This open call deals with the first residency focusing on jazz and electronic music and taking place from 29.11 to 05.12.2021. The second residency scheduled in May 2022 will deal with improvisation, ethnic and folk music. The last residency in fall 2022 will focus on a larger ensemble with possibility of participation of the artists of the first two residencies. The open calls for the second and third residencies will be published by end of 2021 and in spring 2022.

Each residency will result in a concert at the Centre for Fine Arts Brussels. The residency will provide a mentorship programme according to the needs and expectations of the selected artists. A first online meeting will be organised in September/October 2021 to allow them to introduce themselves and share first artistic ideas.

Please note that due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this residency programme could be postponed if necessary.

Deadline for the application is 6 July at 6:00 pm (CET).
