„Untitled (Questions)“ by Barbara Kruger

The Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles MOCA has reinstalled the monumental wall piece by Californian artist Barbara Kruger (born New York 1945), Untitled (Questions) (1990/2018). The emblematic red, white, and blue artwork was commissioned by MOCA in 1989 for the exhibition A Forest of Signs: Art in the Crisis of Representation, and was last installed on the south wall of the MOCA building (now The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA) in 1990. The work occupies an iconic place in the collective memory of the Los Angeles art scene and is considered one of the museum's curatorial highlights in its forty-year history.
 
This iteration is installed on the north facade of The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, opposite Temple Street, and measures 30 x 191 feet. With nine questions, including "Who is beyond the law?", "Who is bought and sold?", and "Who is free to choose?", the work refers to questions of patriotism, civic engagement, and power relations. In connection with the work, MOCA was involved in a series of actions to facilitate voter registration for the midterm elections in the US in 2018 and will continue this work for the 2020 elections.
