Art criticism: deconstructing, contextualizing, reinventing

How can we rethink the art of criticism from the South? And how does it relate to the critical tradition? The word "critique" has three distinct meanings: critique as the exercise of the subject, the art of criticizing as a technique, and "critique" as shorthand for "cultural critique" or "art critique". These three dimensions are interrelated, and to point this out is both to recognize the vague and sometimes confused nature of the word "criticism", and not to lose sight of the common ground that links these different meanings, and the shared meaning that the term retains despite the diversity of its uses.

Perhaps this is what we need to keep constantly in mind, especially today: the significance of this term within our cultural landscapes, from the histories that concern us - black critical theory, the black radical tradition and black feminist theory.
