Malte and Liv are both teachers, they are young and very much in love. They spend their summer holidays on Mallorca, enjoying Mediterranean food and having sex on the beach. When they are attacked by three German boys, the incident escalates quickly and Liv is raped by one of the attackers. Two years after the traumatic event, Malte and Liv are still together. Both have found a way to cope with the traumatic experience: She is just finishing a therapy, he is taking boxing lessons. They are quite happy and determined to stay together. When Malte happens to meet the rapist, the couple is put to a severe test: While Liv longs for acceptance and healing, Malte gets carried away by its urge for revenge - and again the situation seems to get out of control.

"The greatest strength of this fine film lies in the actors, above all Maximilian Brückner and Luise Heyer, who never peddle their feelings, but instead let them shimmer softly - all their fears, doubts and concerns, the shame and guilt and finally the fright of becoming the perpetrator oneself.” (Anke Sterneborg, epd film)

"The most beautiful couple tells of a great trauma, profoundly and with a subliminal force rarely found in German cinema." (Anna Wollner, NDR)

“The director […] creates a disturbing drama, blurring the thin line between justice and revenge. Nevertheless, The Most Beautiful Couple is not a nihilistic film: it’s an ode to the power of love as the best weapon to overcome life's obstacles.” (Carlota Mosegui, Cineuropa)
