On May 11th and 12th Toronto will be celebrating the diversity of comics at the annual Toronto Comic Arts Festival and the Goethe-Institut will join in. As this year’s guest we are happy to welcome Nora Krug, author of the visual memoir Belonging: A German Reckons with History and Home, in which Krug takes on a powerful investigation into her German family’s involvement in World War II. It was chosen as a New York Times Critics’ Top Books of 2018 and as one of The Guardian’s Best Books of 2018. Piecing together her family’s history through a variety of visual devices – her book includes photographs, postcards, newspapers and documents, children’s exercise books, watercolours, comic strips and hand lettered text – Krug explores what it means to belong and what impact history has on successive generations.

Nora Krug, born 1977 in Karlsruhe, is a professor at the renowned Parsons School of Design in New York. Her visual narratives have appeared in The New York Times, The Guardian, Le Monde diplomatique and A Public Space. Her work has been exhibited internationally, and her animations were shown at the Sundance Film Festival. Her previous work includes the graphic novel, Red Riding Hood Redux, silk-screen book, Shadow Atlas and the visual biography, Kamikaze. She also illustrated the children’s book, My Cold Went on Vacation.
