I'm against it because you're for it
I'm against it, I'm not like you
I'm against it, no matter what it's about
I'm against it because you don't understand anything about it
I'm against it, I'll say it again
I'm against it, it doesn't matter why
I'm against it, even if you don't like it
I call it freedom, you call it disrespect
--- Die Ärzte, 1998 (13) - Translated from German

What to do when inner values and external reality can no longer be reconciled? Ignore, despair, laugh it off, or resist? Rejection of authority, denunciation of abuses, inner resistance, attempts at revolution from within or without, protests that turn into movements—in this film series, we explore the various forms of more or less spontaneous, individual, and social expressions of discontent. Where are the boundaries between “small acts of resistance in everyday life” and resistance against great injustice? How far does civil disobedience go? And does the urgency of a good cause justify the means? And who decides whether a cause is “good” in the first place?
Social change takes time – what happens to those who find themselves on the margins of major movements?

The series brings together films from almost 90 years, addressing anti-capitalist positions, working-class solidarity, German resistance during National Socialism, and the current climate protests. But it will also deal with the less “vocal,” less visually powerful forms of resistance: a mother's struggle against the justice system, the attempt by lawyer Fritz Bauer to resist from within the system and impose something like a confrontation with the past on Germans wallowing in the economic miracle and blissful ignorance after World War II.
Ultimately, the series also aims to invite reflection and comparison with our present: What is the great injustice of our time? What has changed since the big movements of the past? And where do we stand today, what can we do, what do we want to do in the face of the current multiple crises?

The film series is presented by the Goethe-Institut Montreal in collaboration with students from Collège Maisonneuve. The donations collected at these screenings will be used to fund a trip for students to Berlin as part of the Berlin International Film Festival in February 2026.
The series is inspired by the dossier “Stir it up - Creative Dissent” from our transatlantic magazine gegenüber
