There is trouble in paradise. German vacationer, Nathalie, witnesses a tragedy on the Canary Islands, which are usually a dream destination. But not on this particular day. When a refugee boat washes ashore bearing only ten survivors, Nathalie is the first person to reach them. Her instinct is to do everything she can to help those in need. But the border guard, José, has an entirely different approach. Years of work have made him cynical and calloused. Due to his position José can decide the fates of many people and oftentimes sees them deported. Nathalie’s and José’s paths cross because of Zola, a Congolese man, and his son Mamadou. After Zola and Mamadou are placed into an internment camp, Nathalie is willing to do anything she can to help. But soon Zola finds himself in yet another precarious situation, when he gets into the hands of criminal smugglers.

The Colour of the Ocean is a gripping and moving picture about humanity and responsibility. It focuses on the human dilemma of when and if to get involved or not. How should one act, when it is not foreseeable if one’s actions will make matters better or worse?

The film will be shown in German with English subtitles. Afterwards there will be a moderated discussion in German.
