Babylon Berlin – A Gereon Rath Mystery
New crime fiction from Germany
Volker Kutscher - a German author from Cologne - has created a hugely successful crime series with the invention of his character Inspector Gereon Rath. The series consists of over five books whose storylines play out against the background of Berlin in the 1930s.
On May 19th the first volume of this series will appear in English translation under the title Babylon Berlin (original German title Der nasse Fisch), translated by Niall Sellar and published by Sandstone Press.
To mark the occasion Volker Kutscher and Niall Sellar will chat with the publisher Robert Davidson about the book, the translation, and the reception of German crime fiction in Great Britain.
Volker Kutscher lives and works as an author in Cologne. He studied German literature, Philosophy and History and then worked as a newspaper editor before making his debut as a novelist in 2007 with the publication of Der nasse Fisch (Babylon Berlin). His books have sold over one million copies to date.
Niall Sellar
Niall Sellar gained a MSc in Translation Studies from the University of Edinburgh and went on to work as a translator, taking on English language teaching as an additional job. In addition to Babylon Berlin, two further translations by Niall Sellar have been published: Game: Faint Signals by Alice N. York (2011) and Electrified by Stefan Schwarz (2012)
Robert Davidson
Robert Davidson is the founder and Managing Director of Sandstone Press publisher, based in Dingwall, Scotland. Babylon Berlin is the first German language novel in translation published by Sandstone.
This event is a cooperation between Sandstone Press and the Goethe-Institut.
