Promised Land provides a vital platform for artists, intellectuals and experts to address current shifts within European politics and raises urgent debate and awareness of the challenges, responsibilities and consequences these present.

In the years immediately following World War II, political union was seen as an antidote to the extreme nationalism that had fueled the conflict. An integrated Europe promised open markets, freedom of movement, and justice upheld by the European Court. This vision is now being threatened by the rise of neo-nationalist and populist movements. Borders are being tightened, and either side of them refugee camps are trapping thousands of people fleeing from conflict, extreme poverty and ecological disaster. Distrust and fear are mounting.

What are the ramifications for art and artists? What insights and ideas are artists bringing? How can we move forward at a time of extreme uncertainty?

Offering a platform for debate, sharing and learning the Goethe-Institut London has been collaborating with Culture+Conflict, ICA and Central Saint Martins to present international panel discussions, symposia, film screenings and an artist commission bringing together experts, artists and the public to move this necessary conversation forward.
