Free Taster Session of Coding & German

Among the highlights this year is a free taster session of Coding & German, an innovative workshop for children and teenagers that combines basic programming with introductory German. Using the Calliope Mini microcontroller and a playful, hands-on approach, this drop-in session offers a unique way to experience how language and technology can come together in creative and memorable ways.

“We’re excited to give young people a taste of how learning German can be fun, and practical,” says Andrea Pfeil, Director, Goethe-Institut London. “This session is a great introduction to our full Coding & German course and a perfect fit for the spirit of the festival.”

Part of a bigger picture: inspiring a new generation of German learners

The taster session is part of the Goethe-Institut’s broader commitment to making German accessible and exciting for young people in the UK. Recent initiatives include:
  • Wuschel auf der Erde – A beautiful new textbook and learning resource, illustrated by The Gruffalo’s Axel Scheffler, introducing primary-aged children to German through the adventures of a friendly alien.
  • Coding & German – A beginners course for ages 10–17 that blends STEM and language learning using real-world tech tools.
  • Gimagine Award – A flexible, gamified online programme for ages 13–18, now officially recognised as a Skills section provider for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
These initiatives are designed to spark curiosity, build confidence and open doors to future opportunities through language learning.

Other festival activities at the Goethe-Institut include hands-on workshops inspired by Wuschel auf der Erde for younger children, a silent Quantum Disco, German taster sessions for all ages, Yoga & German for children and more.

All events are free of charge and part of a wider celebration in South Kensington featuring partners such as Imperial College London, the Natural History Museum, Science Museum, Royal Albert Hall and many more.
