Incendiary Fictions: Straub-Huillet and Screen Adaptation
Workshop & Film Screening
-
King's College London - Nash Lecture Theatre, London
- Part of series: The Films of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet
"The first thing I do is to start copying out." (Jean-Marie Straub)
This workshop, organised in collaboration with Kings College London and led by Martin Brady, will look in detail at short films of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet which use prose (Heinrich Böll, Marguerite Duras, Franz Kafka) and poetry (Stephane Mallarmé) as their source material. Martin Brady, Helen Hughes, Roland-François Lack and Nikolaj Lübecker will introduce and discuss the films to explore why literary texts, in the words of Danièle Huillet, “are still necessary to start the fire”. Erica Carter will chair the discussion amongst the speakers and with the audience.
This workshop is being held in collaboration with the German Screen Studies Network (GSSN).
The following films will be screened as part of the workshop:
Machorka-Muff, Dirs: Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub, West Germany, 1962, 35mm/Digital, b&w, 18 min., in German with English subtitles.
Toute révolution est un coup de dés, Every Revolution is a Throw of the Dice, Dirs: Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub, France, 1977, 35mm/Digital, 10 min., in French with English subtitles.
